A chainsaw is inevitably something all people will use at some point in their life, and an electric chainsaw is simply a better option for both the environment and your wallet. A chainsaw is traditionally used for tree felling, but it can be used in so many ways other than this. Chainsaws are perfect for chopping firewood in the winter, removing trees from your property, and for removing fallen trees from your property (limbing).
For most people, a small electric chainsaw such a WORX electric chainsaw will be more than sufficient to meet their needs at home, but for others, chainsaws are more serious business. The best commercial electric chainsaw can be incredibly powerful and used for serious chopping.
There’s loads of benefits to choosing an electric chainsaw such as below…
- A better option for the environment as they emit far less harmful emissions than traditional gas powered chainsaws.
- They operate much more quietly than gas powered chainsaws.
- You wont need to purchase gas saving you money.
- They’re super easy to switch on.
Of course there are disadvantages and the biggest is that often they’re not as powerful as the best gas powered chainsaws, but most of us don’t need this. The electric chainsaw reviews below can be used as your guide to finding the best brand of chainsaw for your needs, providing a guide to the best deals on chainsaws for your needs.
What are the types of top rated electric chainsaws?
Within the field of electric chainsaws, there are two major types – corded and cordless. A corded chainsaw will need to be plugged into a socket to deliver powder. These are often more powerful than cordless chainsaws which are usually smaller and operated with battery power.
You can read a full comparison of these types of chainsaws below.
An electric chainsaw includes chainsaws that are plugged into the wall. This obviously has the advantage of not needing to refill with fuel and it and be often be more cost efficient. However, the versatility of the chainsaw is reduced as you are limited to places where you have connectivity to electricity.
- No fumes
- Less vibrations than a gas powered chainsaw
- Quieter than a gas powered chainsaw
- Can only be used in places where electricity is available
- Limited by the length of the cord
Battery powered chainsaws can be a great option for those requiring a less powerful chainsaw. These are a cordless electric chainsaw that are quieter than gas powered chainsaws and easier to maintain. They also produce fewer vibrations and operate more quietly. However, battery powered chainsaws will need to be charged and can be limited in their life.
- Easy to maintain
- Requires a full charge
- Not at powerful as gas powered
Other things to consider when looking for top chainsaws…
The weight of the chainsaw is important not only because of the strength but your ability to use it. Excluding the chain bar, the average chainsaw weights around 11 lbs. The weight is important as if the chainsaw is too heavy then it will be awkward to use, and you may need to take breaks. It can also become quite dangerous, especially when using the chainsaw at heights. You can see the benefit of a lightweight chainsaw. However, you also don’t want it so light that you could easily drop it. Therefore it is an important factor to consider.
Electric chainsaws are definitely smaller in size than your standard gas powered chainsaw and the best small electric chainsaw can usually be found around 14 inches. The size refers to the size of the chain bar and will determine the usability of the chainsaw. The average chainsaw ranges in sizes from 12 inches up to around 25 inches and even over for the best commercial grade chainsaw. Depending on how you will use the chainsaw, anywhere between these sizes should be appropriate. A chainsaws size will differ if tree cutting from pruning, and so consider your needs and how versatile your chainsaw needs to be when considering the size you purchase.
Safety should be one of your most important considerations when purchasing a chainsaw, and you should read about how to keep safe when using your chainsaw. Something that many electric chainsaws for sale include is anti vibration handles. These are beneficial as they reduce the strain on your hands when operating the chainsaw by absorbing the vibrations.
Another safety feature of the top electric chainsaw is automatic brakes to ensure the chainsaw is not in operation when it is not intended to be.
Another thing to consider is the wearing of personal protective safety wear, including appropriate clothing with protection from chainsaw injuries, strong boots and a helmet with hearing protection. Also ensure that a first aid kit it available so that you are prepared, and wear a pair of gloves.
The benefit of choosing the best electric pole chainsaw is that you will inevitably leave less of a footprint on the environment, however less of a footprint is not no footprint so it is still something that you should be aware of. Some of the best electric chainsaws are listed as CARB compliant, where the Clean Air Agency of California has certified that the chainsaw minimizes harm to the environment.
How to sharpen a chainsaw
If you read through electric pole chainsaw reviews you’ll know that one question many people ask is how to keep the chainsaw sharp.
To ensure that your chainsaw is always in the best condition, it is important that you sharpen your chainsaw blades occasionally. This leaves people with the question of how to sharpen chainsaw blades safely and securely, whilst also knowing when to sharpen them.
Depending on how frequently you use your chainsaw and the jobs you use it for, the frequency that you will need to sharpen your chainsaw will differ. Usually, I sharpen my chainsaw after a few light uses. If I have had a day of heavy use, I may even sharpen it after one use. You will know when the blade needs sharpening, such as when you see dust coming out of the saw. When you become acquainted with it, you will recognize the need for sharpening it before this happens.
After reading some electric chainsaw sharpener reviews the best electric chainsaw sharpener I could find for this is the Buffalo Tools ECSS. This makes it super easy to keep your chainsaw sharp and ready to take on the next job you throw at it after you set a permanent home for it. This was no issue for me as I regularly use my electric chainsaw for yard work.
A chainsaw can be sharpened using a file. This method will require you to lock your chainsaw into a vice to hold it into place, and to run the chainsaw whilst holding a file over the blades. It is important to read your instruction manual and see how they detail the sharpening procedures as they can differ over chainsaws, and to ensure this is always done wearing the correct protective gear such as gloves.
Your other options for sharpening a chainsaw blade include having the chainsaw sharpened professionally. Usually this is pretty straightforward and can be done by dropping your chainsaw into a hardware shop, and can be relatively inexpensive.
Otherwise, there is always the option of purchasing another chain, but this is usually a last resort. As a chainsaw is a costly investment, it is wise to keep it in the best shape as possible, so ensure your chainsaw stays sharp and in great operation.
Top 7 electric chainsaw reviews 2017
Below we will review electric chainsaw options on the market to help you find an electric chainsaw that is right for you.
GreenWorks 20312 G-MAX 40V 16-Inch Cordless Chainsaw review
Battery powered chainsaws are becoming ever more popular, and whilst there can be a big difference between the best professional chainsaw reviews and battery powered chainsaw reviews, the GreenWorks 20312 G-Max is closing the gap. The GreenWorks chainsaw is the perfect chainsaw for everything the average chainsaw user will throw at it.
The GreenWorks electric chainsaw uses a 40V battery and can cut continuously on a single charge for over 100 cuts. This was the minimum amount of cuts and the range can generally be around 120 cuts on a full charge. The battery also takes around 120 minutes to charge fully, with you likely to wear out before it does.
The chainsaw is safe with a low kickback chain, and is comfortable to use with a great reduction in vibration. The chainsaw is equipped to tackle trees, but may need oiling and tightening more frequently than others. Included with the chainsaw is also a soft cover for storage.
For many this is the best cordless electric chainsaw and it’s not hard to see why – this is the best light duty chainsaw for heavy duty work.
BLACK+DECKER LCS1240 40-volt Cordless Chainsaw, 12-Inch review
The best small chainsaw to buy will differ based on what you consider ‘small’ to be. Although some chainsaw reviews may consider 12 inches to be too small, I think when you are looking for small, you need small. The BLACK+DECKER LCS1240 is perfect for routine property maintenance at only 12 inches.
The cordless chainsaw runs on a 40v battery and is ready to use straight out of the box. Battery life is excellent and charging the chainsaw is speedy work. At around 10 lbs, the chainsaw is very lightweight and so is a perfect small chainsaw for women.
The Black and Decker electric chainsaw also allows for tool free chain tightening and has an automatic oiling system which gives plenty of lubrication when cutting, meaning that the chainsaw is low maintenance. The oil does tend to leak as with other chainsaws that self oil, so it is wise to store it carefully.
The battery means that it has slightly less power than other chainsaws, but this is at the sacrifice of a quieter chainsaw that is worth every penny. This chainsaw remains the best lightweight chainsaw for women for both big and small jobs.
WORX WG303.1 16-Inch Chain Saw, 3.5 HP 14.5 Amp review
In a small package and perfect for around the house, 3.5 HP 16 inch WORX chainsaw is the best cheap electric chainsaw. When looking for the best cheap chainsaw, part of what makes a chainsaw great is not missing out on features that are important.
The WORX electric chainsaw allows for chain replacement with auto lubrication and no tools which probably its most alluring feature. The chainsaw is powerful enough for big jobs with great control and comfort, and makes for fuss free use.
If you are worried about an electric chainsaw power being low and weight being high, then worry not. The WORX 16 Inch chainsaw is both powerful and a relatively lightweight chainsaw. The included oil is quite thin, but does the automatic lubrication works well. Some lightweight chainsaw reviews also found that the brake can be activated too frequently in use.
This chainsaw has the advantage of being low maintenance and runs quieter than gas, and is the best lightweight chainsaw for the price.
If you need something a bit smaller, you can also check out the WORX 14 inch electric chainsaw reviews here.
Makita UC4051A Electric Chainsaw, 16″ review
The Makita UC4051A is another best chainsaw for homeowner use, with several features that make the chainsaw efficient and operational. This includes a simple chain adjustment with one touch requiring no tools to keep the chain tightly in place.
This chainsaw makes everything easy with automatic oiling making continuous use easy. The motor is powerful and starts smoothly. The Makita electric chainsaw is corded and so does not require gas but does require an electricity connection. The cord is long and sufficient for most jobs.
The chainsaw cuts through wood easily meaning it is the best chainsaw for firewood. It is also comfortable enough for continuous good use, and is well deserving of its commercial rating. The only con in that best electric chainsaw reviews is that the chain can be over oiling. For a good electric chainsaw, the tool less blade makes for a great buy.
Oregon CS1500 Self-Sharpening Electric Chain Saw Review
The next best corded chainsaw is the Oregon CS1500. First and foremost the thing that I absolutely love about the Oregon CS1500 chainsaw is that is is self sharpening. Anyone that has had to sharpen their chainsaw before knows that this can be difficult and so this saves a huge amount of time already.
The chainsaw blade itself is long. This is an 18 inch chainsaw which is significantly longer than a lot of the other electric chainsaws and means it competes more so with larger gas powered chainsaws. There’s also a tooless tensioning system which is super simple to adjust – you simply twist the knob.
There’s noticeably less vibration with this chainsaw but that doesn’t equate to any less power. In comparison to a lot of electric chainsaws on the market, this chainsaw really does feel like a beast and able to tackle some serious work.
However it’s absolutely imperative that you keep the chain lubricated. Some reviews have reports issues with the chain coming loose due to a lack of lubrication and you want to avoid this at all costs. For a powerful electric chainsaw capable of tackling big jobs, this would be my pick and it’s by far the best rated electric chainsaw at this size.
DEWALT DCCS690M1 40V 4AH Lithium Ion XR Brushless Chainsaw, 16″ Review
You can choose the DEWALT chainsaw with a 4AH and 6AH battery, but this review will focus on the 4AH version. This chainsaw is super user friendly with tooless tensioning and auto oiling which always scored big points for me, plus it’s the most powerful electric chainsaw I’ve personally used.
A 16 inch bars allows for plenty of room for decent sized jobs and the auto oiling is super handy when you’re in the middle of a job (plus it makes the electric chainsaw that bit safer and easier to use). There’s also an easy to operate handbrake in situations that call for it.
The DEWALT electric chainsaw like other battery powered models is super easy to start and when in operation has an almost silent hum. A single charge allows for a fair amount of sawing and should get your through a job easily enough and the battery charges super fast – in about half an hour.
You do have to keep the handle engaged while you are sawing, but this is beneficial as it doesn’t waste battery power having an idle chainsaw running. Plus it is safer.
Remington RM1425 Limb N Trim 8 Amp 14- Inch Electric Chainsaw Review
Following on from the cordless electric chainsaw reviews above, I have to admit that I’m a huge fan of the Remington RM1425, mostly because I think it’s a suitable option for any household. First it’s super affordable but it packs a punch. It’s only designed for smaller jobs but this is all most people need an electric chainsaw for.
The chainsaw is super lightweight at under 7 lbs and holding it feels like no trouble at all. It’s easy to keep oiled with a push button oilier but it is worth mentioning that the chainsaw oil is not included so you will need to purchase this separately.
The 14 inch electric chainsaw is super quiet as well, so much so that you could almost forget that it is running. The low kickback bar definitely helps with cutting. Adjusting it is a bit more of a hassle but the chain stays relatively in place.
Most people out there are simply looking for a lightweight and easy to use electric chainsaw for the branches around their yard and routine maintenance, and for this purpose I can’t recommend this chainsaw enough. It’s quiet, easy to use and gets the job done.
Poulan Pro 967044101 40V Chainsaw, 14″ Review
Poulan produces a range of great quality chainsaws but I’m particularly a fan of the 14″ Poulan electric chainsaw. This electric start chainsaw is super easy to use and able to tackle pretty heavy jobs for a battery powered chainsaw. The thing I really love about it is the maximum use of the battery life and the electric brake which can be activated at any time. It feels super safe and secure.
The power is not an issue however. It cuts well and is super lightweight. It also has an automatic chain oiling system. This system actually works well after the headache of other electric chainsaws where the system can fail over time this is a big bonus. The chainsaw also has an oil level indicator so that you can keep on top of this.
On average the chainsaw takes about an hour and 20 minutes to charge but unfortunately the battery doesn’t last too long – but this is often one of the disadvantages of using an electric chainsaw over a gas powered one.
This is my pick for regular small jobs around your property and I think it’s a reliable choice for regular property maintenance.
